Mesa Spanish Academy Mission

Mesa Spanish Academy

Currently the 37th largest city in the US, Mesa has experienced rapid growth in recent years with a current population of 460,155 of which 24 % or 110,437 residents are Hispanic or Latino, and Spanish speaking.. The plateau that Mesa sits upon was originally settled by the Hohokam Indians who installed a network of irrigation canals to make life more tolerable in the desert conditions. Evidence of the Hohokam and their canals can be seen at the Park of the Canals in Mesa. In 1878 a contingent of Mormons arrived, “The First Mesa Company” and removed the canals, settled and developed the area.

Each year, the Mesa Arts Centre hosts the Dia de los Muertos Celebration, honoring loved ones who have passed away. This festival features an artist Mercado with an assortment of jewelry, crafts and other hand-crafted objects, as well as demonstrations, live music, dancing and a traditional community altar and procession. The Mesa Arts Centre also hosts an annual Mesa Storytelling Festival, a fun gathering of food and fantasy as storytellers from around the globe gather to swap stories by indulging in the art of the spoken word.

Recreation in Mesa can take many forms, including activities for everyone in the family from preschoolers to grandparents at the city-sponsored Red Mountain Multigenerational Center. If you have a yearning to pan for gold and eat BBQ, visit the Rockin’ R Ranch for a few hours. Experience the harsh beauty of the desert from the comfort of a Ranger or Hummer with the Outback Safari Company
